Thank
you for visiting our website! We would like to tell you about an
issue affecting the beautiful and unique city of Palacios, Texas and it's
habitants.....
Act
now to protect the Marsh!The
Palacios Wetlands (the Marsh) is a saltwater marsh of about 55
acres lying west of the active Matagorda County Navigation District #1
(MCND#1) docks. A considerable area adjacent to the City drains
through this marsh which extends to Tres Palacios Bay. Its is
proven to be a live estuary, providing protection to marine animals
such as shrimp, crabs and fish as well as shore birds, and a
buffer between the drained area and the bay. It is also a nursery
area providing food and shelter for juvenile marine species.
Palacios
is part of Matagorda County which has been #1 in The Audubon Society
Christmas Bird Count for 9 years in a row. Last year's count
yeilding 250 different species of birds recorded. This makes
Palacios a tourist destination for many nature-lovers.
Since
July 2006 a group of concerned
citizens have spoken before the MCND#1 with the objective of convincing
them to "approve a Resolution to develop a Policy of Protection of
MCND#1 which would exclude dredging, drainage, damming of the Marsh or
any activity detrimental to it's role in our environment." They
have presented a petition with 250 signatures on Thursday,
December 7 with the request they take action
for the permanent protection of the Marsh.
These issues may also affect the
Texas State Marine Education Center
(T.S.M.E.C) complex which since the late 1980's has been instrumental
in educating children about marine life. There are 2 parts to the
complex, one being part of the Palacios Independent School District for
grades K-12 and the other Texas State Technical College.
We wish to thank you for your consideration of this important issue. ![]() View
